3e RZ badge became famous being the first foreign award to the U.S. Army 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment (509th PIR), in recognition of the units participation that helped capture Youks Les Bains airfield in Algeria during World War II. The 509th carries on the tradition today and has adopted the badge as the unit's distinctive insignia.
