During World War II, Legionnaires either joined the Free French Forces or Vichy France (Régime de Vichy). In 1940, approximately 10,000 Legionnaires of the 2nd Battalion returned to Morocco which was under control of the newly formed Vichy France. They would become known as Vichy Legion or Vichy Legionnaires. Unit existence was short-lived as the Armistice Army was stood down and dissolved on 29 Nov 1942.
