Colonel "Mad Mike" Hoare became famous in the 1960's for his exploits as a mercenary in Belgian Congo, where he helped crush the Communist rebellion and rescued several thousand civilians and missionaries from the marauding Simba rebels.  Mike Hoare's unit consisted of 300 volunteer mercenaries from South Africa, Rhodesia, United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Germany.  The unit was officially designated 5 Commando, Armée Nationale Congolaise (ANC) and unofficially known as "The Wild Geese".
