21st Army Group was tasked with Operation Overlord the invasion of Normandy on 6th June 1944. The 21st AG initially controlled all Allied ground forces during the invasion until sufficient Allied forces had landed and activated their own Army Group. Fought with distinction from the Normandy beaches to the Rhineland campaign. August 1945 it was redesignated H.Q. British Army of the Rhine (BAOR)
